Mixed Media

Mixed media – now this is where I am most at home when creating! I’ve worked with everything conceivable, from the scanner to oil paints. I’ve put found objects together with scraps of paper, and stuck beads and foil into putty. I’ve made stuff out of polymer clay, Photoshop, and masking tape. And of course my favourite medium in the mix is my classic: found images in paper, compiled with paint and whatever else I can get my hands on.

I’m constantly collecting found bits that I might use later in art. So my studio consists of 21 drawers with assorted ephemera and craft supplies: charcoals, conte, crayons, coloured pencils, pastels, paints, stencils, toys, broken glass, fabrics, ribbons, wallpaper, tissue paper, magazines and notebooks and kids books, old invitations and recipes, brochures from any museum or tickets for events, hardware, Scrabble pieces, gouche paints, acrylics, puzzle pieces, glitter, beads. The list goes on.

It’s definitely true that my probable weakness or error in creating is that pieces often end up too “busy”. It’s a challenge for me to avoid overdoing a piece, something that is coming more naturally as my work evolves. I’m super-happy with the way I’m using mixed media and space at the same time in my new series, Life Addiction.
